You are hitting the gym/pitch/track multiple days a week and eating a well-balanced diet but you’re struggling to reach your fitness goals. We’ve researched the world’s leading athletes to uncover elements of their lifestyle that aid in maximising workouts, increasing strength and preventing injury. Two key areas stand out: Sleep and Nutrition.

SLEEP – THE KEY TO RECOVERY

Sleep has a significant impact on performance and recovery, and therefore helping any athlete reach their goals. One study from 2009 showed that increased sleep was associated with a faster sprinting speed and hitting accuracy in college tennis players. Another showed that increasing the average number of hours per sleep for a group of basketball players from 6.5 per night to nearly 8.5 hours per night improved their free throw shooting by 11.4% and their three-point shooting by 13.7%.

REM (rapid eye movement) sleep occurs in cycles of about 90-120 minutes throughout the night, and it accounts for up to 20-25% of total sleep time in adult humans. REM sleep dominates the latter half of the sleep period, especially the hours before waking. REM sleep provides the energy to the brain that supports it during waking hours and is necessary for restoring the mind.

Non-REM sleep (known as deep sleep) is essential for muscle recovery and restoring the body. Accounting for 40% of total sleep time, during this phase your blood pressure drops and your breathing becomes deeper and slower. Your brain is resting with very little activity, so the blood supply available to your muscles increases, delivering extra amounts of oxygen and nutrients which facilitate their healing and growth. Muscles and tissues are rejuvenated during this phase of sleep.

Something else which occurs during adequate time in this phase is the secretion of Growth Hormone. As your body enters into the non-REM deep sleep stage, your pituitary gland releases a shot of growth hormone that stimulates tissue growth and muscle repair. Not enough sleep causes a sharp decline in growth hormone secretion. Growth hormone deficiency is associated with loss of muscle mass and reduced exercise capacity.

Sleeping for 7-9 hours per night is crucial, especially if you are looking to change body composition, increase muscle mass and/or if you want to be ready for your training session the next day. Sleep enhances muscle recovery through protein synthesis and human growth hormone release. If you want to enhance performance the quality of your sleep is crucial.

NUTRITION – THE SUPPLEMENTS YOU MAY NOT HAVE CONSIDERED

It is estimated that 1 Billion people globally are deficient in Vitamin D. Vitamin D is one of the best ways to support our immune system, but it also works to help maintain normal muscle function, cardiovascular function and support the body’s inflammatory response. Vitamin D is clinically proven to alleviate muscle soreness so its no surprise athletes supplement Vitamin D. If you’re prone to DOMS after your workout Vitamin D should be top of your priority list – you’ll recover quicker so that you can get back to your workouts in no time.
