Hemp is part of the cannabis family, more specifically it is a variety of the cannabis sativa plant. It has been grown across the world for centuries, it is used today for many industrial purposes such as textiles, paper, plastics and insulation. It is also widely used to derive healthy food related products such as CBD oil. Hemp is a ‘wonder plant’; it grows extremely quickly, it has hundreds of beneficial uses and is brilliant for the environment, reducing C02 in the air much more effectively than trees. Hemp is chosen for CBD extraction as it contains a high percentage of CBD and a very low percentage of THC meaning it can be legally grown in most countries.

CBD is an acronym for Cannabidiol. CBD is one of over a 100 different cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that naturally occur in the flower and leaves of the plant. They are also referred to as ‘phytocannabinoids’ due to their existence in plants as opposed to cannabinoids found naturally in the body named ‘endocannabinoids’.

The most well known phytocannabinoids are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). While they have the same molecular structure and both react with the body’s endocannabinoid system, they have different effects on the body and mind. THC is the primary psychoactive chemical compound in cannabis which produces the ‘high’ feeling, in contrast CBD is completely non-psychoactive meaning you won’t have any unnatural ‘high’ feelings.

The primary impact of CBD in the body is down to its interaction with the body’s Endocannabinoid System, ECS for short. The Endocannabinoid system is a biological system composed of a network of receptors found throughout the body.

The ECS is fundamental to human wellbeing by regulating other biological systems and maintaining balance throughout the body. It helps our bodies respond effectively to internal and external challenges and supports important physical, mental and emotional functions such as digestion, pain, memory, mood, sleep, metabolism, immunity and inflammation responses.

CBD binds with these receptors and stimulates the entire endocannabinoid system, therefore harmonising and balancing our bodies.

Full spectrum CBD oil is the most natural extract available. Full spectrum means it contains all the phytocannabinoids, terpenes (aromatic flavours) and flavonoids (nutrients) naturally found in the plant. Studies and pre-clinical research have shown that retaining all active compounds through a full spectrum extract enhances the overall effectiveness of CBD, a phenomenon known as the “entourage effect”. The compounds work synergistically as nature intended to deliver wide ranging wellbeing benefits. Full spectrum extracts will also contain traces of the THC compound however the very small percentage of THC is not enough to have any psychoactive effects if taken at the recommended dosage.

Adaptogens are herbal or plant based substances used to help the body respond to stressors of all kinds, be it physical, chemical or biological.

ethos formulate ranges for specific wellbeing needs through blending carefully chosen botanicals and adaptogens with our CBD rich extracts. The botanicals work with the CBD to fortify and improve the effectiveness of each product.

Chamomile has been added to our REST range. It is a herb extract with a calming effect known to promote relaxation and sleep.

Ashwagandha is part of our BALANCE formulation. It is a highly regarded adaptogenic herb used for centuries as a means of supporting balanced responses to internal and external stresses.
